How a short story, novelette, novella and a novel are different?

Writing and reading fiction can be a little tricky particularly if you don't understand how to differentiate between the vast variety of the texts. Although a lot of factors work on  how a piece of fiction would be. But, in this article I have tried to break it down, by discussing them within the word limits that they are created.

Flash fiction / Micro Fiction / Short Short stories are stories written between 53 to 1000 words.

One of my favorite flash fiction work is Good Boys by Homes Ley. The Scribbled stories & tiny terrible tales  are also some portals that publish works of flash fiction.

Short Stories are a very common form of writing.

Where these works are often single episodic, events are talked about in short stories. They often talk & tell stories of particular character and their experiences. They are 7500 words long. A Sacrilegious Murder by Sukriti Mantri.

Novelette were popular back in & time & romantic.

But these form of writing are rarely published now. Novelette are longer than short stories and shorter than novellas. They are usually around  7500-17,000 words. The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is a very popular novelette.

Novellas are usually called long short stories/ short novels.

They are great when a story line is discussed, giving it enough word length. They are widely written under 17000-40,000 words. Animal Farm by George Orwell is one such work that many enjoy reading and is still found relevant.

Novels is one most common fiction that is read widely.

Novels majorly involves multiple characters plots/ sub-plats, twists. Also considering it's length it is usually meant to be read over a period of days. Word count of novels varies a lot depending on publishers and authors, from 40,000- 70,000+ words. However a shorter novel may be of 40,000 words. 29 Seconds is a mystery, psychology thriller novel written by T.M Logan, you can check review of it on my YouTube channel as well.
